Archaeological Evidence of Women
in Priestly Ministry in the Early Church

This mosaic of Bishop Theodora and St. Praxedis is found in a side chapel in St. Praxedis' Church. Theodora (about 820 A.D.) stands next to Praxedis who was a leader of a house church seven hundred years earlier before the consruction of church buildings. According to scholar Dorothy Irvin, the title "episcopa" above Theodora's head indicates a bishop who is a woman. Contact Dorothy Irvin for more information at irvingcalendar@hotmail.com

This fresco was painted on the upper front wall of a small underground chapel in the Catacomb of Priscilla in Rome. The slope of the shoulders, breasts, hair-styles indicate that this is a portrait of women celebrating the Eucharist. Dr. Dorothy Irvin, a theologian and archaeologist, believes that fresco depicts an overnight Eucharistic vigil held near the tomb on the anniversary of a Christian's death.
